Australian Oak Hall Stand

In this video Michael talks us through some of the useful features of this wonderful Australian oak hall stand. A beautiful piece of Australian Antique Furniture.

"Hi, here we have one of the most popular pieces of furniture ever built - the hall stand. This particular example happens to be an Australian oak one, and in a particular style which is called arts and crafts. Now true arts and crafts style is an interesting style. It was born out of probably Victorian excesses was sort of frowned upon towards the turn of that century, we’re talking 1870, 1880.

People were getting sick and tired of the excesses of the Victorian period, extravagant carvings, and elaborate carvings, and all these things. So, what the craftsman did at the time, they decided that they would go back to their natural roots. Their natural roots were wood, made out of wood, showing beautiful craftsmanship.

This is what arts and crafts is all about. If you look at the lines of this piece, what are they saying to you? They’re showing off these wonderful pieces of timber, in lovely geometric shapes, showing you what they can do as craftsman with wood. The wood does all the talking in this. They’ve also embellished this with a lovely hand carved panel of seahorses in a kind of naturalistic setting, which is only really adding to what we can do with timber.

If you look at the simple geometric lines, the simplicity of the piece, this what the arts and crafts movement is all about. This is a fantastic Australian example. It has wonderful shaped hooks, made out a cast metal. You’ve got a fantastic hall seat which is really handy for putting your shoes and sitting down on and changing your shoes, and storing things in there. You’ve got an umbrella rack which is traditional with most hall stands, with the traditional pan at the bottom.

This also has a lovely feature of having a shelf, which I find personally very handy at home, we have a similar example, and we put a tray on there and we chuck our keys into there, and when we’re going out we’re oh car keys, beauty,  that’s where they are - I find that very good."

The mirror of course for that last look to make sure you’re looking your very best. A very wonderful practical piece of furniture, and this is in wonderful clean original condition, and like most hall stands, very useful."
