An outstanding late-19th-century French two-drawer commode, circa 1890, decorated in the Chinoiserie style with richly detailed figural and landscape scenes across the front, bird motifs to the sides and elegant ormolu mounts. Description
The painted decoration gives this French commode a strong visual presence, while the ormolu mounts add gilt-metal contrast and definition around the richly ornamented surfaces. Its generous two-drawer format also provides useful storage, making it suitable for a bedroom, entrance hall, living room or formal interior.
Chinoiserie was a European decorative tradition inspired by interpretations of East Asian art and design. Here, that decorative language is expressed through the figural, landscape and bird motifs that distinguish the piece.
